Academic Classes & Other Programs

Chinese Immersion Program

Students entering in Kindergarten may choose to have 50% of the day taught in Mandarin Chinese and 50% of the day taught in English. This is the only Chinese Immersion school-day program in Hawaii. Subjects like math, science and art are taught in Mandarin. Subjects like language arts, social studies and religion are taught in English. Studies have shown that immersion programs develop language fluency and increase students’ standardized test scores and critical thinking abilities across all academic subjects. Grade School (Grades K-5) & Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Maryknoll Grade School establishes a solid foundation in English reading and writing, math, science and social studies. Classes are approximately 20-25 students, and students are expected to work independently and in teams. Students learn science through hands-on science experiments and can join the international award-winning VEX robotics team. They learn the basics of entrepreneurship and start their own pretend business, study music and art, and can join sports teams for basketball and volleyball. Learn more about Maryknoll Grade School. Maryknoll Middle School includes classes with hands-on, engineering, design, automation and robotics individual and team projects. Students learn science through hands-on experiments and on 3D virtual reality computers. The entire class travels to Hawai‘i Island to learn about Hawaiian culture and history, and to Washington, D.C. on the U.S. mainland to learn about U.S. history and government. High School (Grades 9-12)

Maryknoll High School prepares students for admission to U.S. colleges and universities. Students can take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in 14 subjects (see below). Every student complete an independently designed research project of their choice during their senior year. Students may sign up to be matched with a mentor who is a working professional in a field that interests them. Maryknoll also has a unique partnership with Hawai‘i Pacific University (HPU) that enables students to graduate from high school with a Maryknoll high school diploma and an HPU two-year college degree, meaning that they could potentially finish their bachelor’s degree at HPU or another university in as little as two years. International Exchange

Maryknoll School has had sister school relationships in China and Japan for the past 20 years. Every year, through the ENVOY student exchange program, students from China and Japan visit Maryknoll, and students from Maryknoll visit China and Japan. Maryknoll School also offers the Common Goal Diplomacy Program, a new program to foster international relations through friendly athletic competition. In March 2017, the Maryknoll Boys Varsity I Basketball Team traveled to Shanghai, China. They played goodwill games, stayed in homestays with Chinese high school basketball players, discussed U.S.-China relations with the Chinese students, and visited the U.S. Embassy. Maryknoll intends to continue to grow the Common Goal Program to allow more students to experience other cultures and bridge relationships between countries. Athletics

Maryknoll School has a robust athletics program that includes more than 20 sports and 100 teams. The athletic mascot is the Spartans. Maryknoll is known for its strong, championship-winning teams in basketball, volleyball, softball, bowling and other sports. Our Class of 2021 freshmen and Class of 2020 sophomores stayed on campus for “Career Day (and more)”, our Class of 2019 juniors attended the 2018 NACAC Spring College Fair and visited universities across the island, and our Class of 2018 seniors performed community service at Kuliouou Beach Park. Congratulations to our very own, Ivana Martinez ’18, who placed 6th in the Congressional Debate National Qualifying Tournament held a month ago at UH Lab. Not only did she serve as the presiding officer of the senate, but she also presented her arguments on various issues as a senator.
